UNDP Serbia Resident Representative Visited a CHP Plant in Botoš

Francine Pickup, who has recently assumed duties as the UNDP Serbia Resident Representative, visited a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Botoš, near City of Zrenjanin on 9 August, 2019. The plant is owned by “Biolektra” company.

The construction of the plant was supported by a grant awarded through a public call announced in 2015 by the Ministry of Mining and Energy in cooperation with UNDP. Grants were provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the UNDP Project “Reducing Barriers to Accelerate the Development of Biomass Markets in Serbia”. In this case, the total value of grant was 15% of the investment value of the plant, or $ 275,000. The plant has 0.6 MW of electrical and 0.6 MW of thermal power installed. The total value of investment in this plant is $ 2,37 million.

Ministry of Mining and Energy (MME), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) organised on March 21st and 22nd a two-day event in the big conference hall of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia. The event consisted of the final conference of the project “Reducing Barriers to Accelerate the Development of Biomass Markets in Serbia” and “Hard Talk: New Possibilities for Developing Renewable Energy Sustainably in Serbia”.

Between September and November 2018 five workshops were held on the topic: “Energy plantations of fast-growing species in Serbia”. Workshops were held in Sremska Mitrovica, Niš, Kruševac, Novi Sad and Pančevo. Lectures were delivered by professor Branko Stajić, PhD, from the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade, Dušan Jović, BSc in forestry and Zoran Knezevic, BSc in agriculture from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management.

On Thursday, 22 November 2018, another round of practical classes on the site of a CHP plant in Alibunar was organised for the students of the final year at the Thermal Engineering Department and Internal Combustion Engines Department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade. Students visited a combined heat and power (CHP) generation plant whose construction was financially supported by UNDP/GEF project “Reducing Barriers to Accelerate the Development of Biomass Markets in Serbia”. Director Danko Vuković greeted the students on behalf of the owner of the plant, Bioenergy company.
