Visit to the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia

The Resident Representative of the UN and UNDP in Serbia, Mrs. Irena Vojackova Sollorano, with her associates on 12 February 2016 visited the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and met with Aleksandra Tomić, Ph.D., Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee for agriculture, regional development, trade, tourism and energy and the Parliamentary Energy Forum, who on that occasion presented to Mrs. Vojackova Sollorano the competences of the Committee and the activities and results achieved by three informal parliamentary groups since their establishment: the Parliamentary Forum for Energy Policy, the Women’s Parliamentary Network, and the Green MP Group.

Mrs. Tomić noted that MP’s of this convocation of the National Assembly are aware of the relevance of energy efficiency and that they are investing great efforts in making this topic more visible to the public. The Resident representative of the UN and UNDP, Mrs. Irena Vojackova Sollorano agreed that the National Assembly should take an active role in promoting energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources and in this manner serve as a role model to local self-governments. She emphasized the need to increase the use of energy from renewable sources, and to increase the installed capacity of generating plants fired on biomass since biomass is the most important renewable energy source in Serbia. Mrs. Vojackova Sollorano presented the current projects in the field of biomass and energy management which UNDP is implementing in cooperation with the Ministry of Mining and Energy and which are funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). Mrs. Irena Vojackova Sollorano accepted the proposal of Aleksandra Tomić to draw up a joint plan on cooperation between the National Assembly and UNDP in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources and stressed that parliamentarians can count on the strong commitment of the UNDP to achieving results in this field.
