29 Units of Local Self-government Start Developing Plans for the Use of Locally Available Biomass for Energy Generation

On Wednesday, 11 April 2018, a new project activity implemented in the framework of cooperation between UNDP and 29 municipalities that were selected in the Public Call for support to local self-government units to introduce the Energy Management System and the use of locally available biomass for energy generation was presented in the large hall of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia, Terazije 23.
The presentation was attended by 43 representatives of local self-governments (energy managers and agricultural officers), representatives of the Ministry of Mining and Energy, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, as well as representatives of consulting firms contracted by the project.
A consortium led by a German firm GFA has won the tender for the development of plans for the use of locally available biomass.
In her opening remarks, Ms Maja Matejić, UNDP Energy Portfolio Manager, briefly explained the importance of this activity and the manner of its implementation. Following this, Mr Zoran Kapor, GFA Project Manager, presented the time frame of activities and the plan of cooperation and communication between local self-governments and consultants. GFA experts, professor Branko Glavonjic and professor Todor Janic, explained in detail the methodology of the collection of data on annual yields and consumption of woody and agricultural biomass as well as the way of identifying local needs for thermal energy. Lastly, Dragan Urosevic presented results related to the implementation of activities set in the Public Call.
Final session of the meeting was focused on the activities of energy managers in local self-governments and on an interactive discussion about existing problems and recommendations for future work.
